Hurricane Simon Category 2 Off Mainland Mexico, Plus Los Cabos Weather and Surf

Sal y sol, Cabo. The video for this episode is on its way. Read the full report below.

Tonight's report

¡Buenas noches, Los Cabos! Lobo here, live from the rock, and tonight's show is presented by East Cape Concierge. Hurricane Simon is spinning off the mainland, so let's get into it.

Okay amigos, tropics first.

As of the two o'clock advisory, Simon is a Category two hurricane with max winds of one hundred miles an hour. It's about seventy-five miles west of Cabo Corrientes, roughly two hundred seventy-five miles southeast of Cabo San Lucas, crawling west-northwest at three miles an hour.

The forecast: a slow northwest drift tonight into early Tuesday, then a gradual turn to the northeast. Simon should be near Las Islas Marias tonight into Tuesday, then approach the west-central Mexico coast Wednesday into Thursday. It may weaken a bit, then could strengthen some by Wednesday. The Hurricane Center calls it a low confidence track, so we keep watching.

A Hurricane Warning is up for Las Islas Marias, and a Hurricane Watch runs from Cabo Corrientes to Bahia Tempehuaya. The tropical storm warning from Playa Perula to Cabo Corrientes is discontinued.

For our neighbors on the mainland: hurricane conditions are likely in Las Islas Marias tonight into Tuesday, with tropical storm conditions possible in the watch area by Tuesday night. Rain totals of five to ten inches across coastal west-central Mexico, with up to fifteen inches in spots over Sinaloa by Thursday. Simon's swells could bring life-threatening surf and rip currents to that coast. Follow Protección Civil.

Back home, it's looking pretty chill.

Mañana, Tuesday, partly cloudy with a high of eighty-nine and a low of seventy-three. Light east-southeast wind around seven miles an hour, dry, and the water's a toasty eighty-seven degrees. Wednesday brings some showers with a high near eighty-nine, and Thursday eases to eighty-seven.

Now the good stuff, surf!

NOAA's wave model shows about six and a half feet at twenty seconds out of the west-northwest tomorrow morning, in open water just south of the Cape, holding steady. Remember, that's offshore height, not what breaks on the beach, so check your spot before you paddle out.

Big thanks to East Cape Concierge. Want a private chef cooking dinner after a day snorkeling at Cabo Pulmo? They've got you, amigos. eastcapeconcierge.com.

That's the tide report. Stay safe, look out for each other. Sal y sol, Cabo.
